Oracle Launches Major Pedigree and Serialization Product

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Since we do a lot of pedigree-related work, and deal with many of the vendors in this space, we had an opportunity to get an early look at Oracle’s Pedigree and Serialization Manager (OPSM) solution.  OPSM was designed to create and manage serial numbers, record and transmit serial number hierarchies and create pedigrees.  OPSM was designed to comply with both document model (California) and centralized server (European) methods of pedigree reporting and to be extensible to meet future pedigree formats and data standards.  Additionally, OPSM has an open web services architecture that should allow for additional features, such as product authentication, analytics and enhanced supply chain visibility.

Why Cloud Computing Will Penetrate Life Sciences Differently

Monday, August 9th, 2010

More than half of U.S. enterprises now consider cloud computing a viable technology, with favorable views on cloud jumping by more than 50 percent in just a year, according to the Boston market research firm Yankee Group. The information technology-oriented research house said in a report that “cloud computing is on the cusp of broad enterprise adoption.”

Clinical Inventory Visibility: Seeing What it Takes

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Whether you’re using a clinical supplies application, an ERP system, or lots of spreadsheets to track inventory (or all of the above!), you know there’s got to be a better way.  We hear requirements like “I want to go to ONE place to see where ALL of my inventory is” and “I need a better method for tracing lots back to their source – too much paper involved”.  But with a complex supply chain and many partners doing the manufacturing, packaging and distribution for you, visibility is not easily achieved.

Leveraging PVBS and Dynamics NAV for Life Science Project Accounting

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Through our work with a client, we’ve discovered a very powerful ERP package designed for extreme project accounting requirements.  It’s from Pleasant Valley Business Systems (PVBS) and it has been built on top of Microsoft Dynamics NAV.  Many of our clients require extreme project accounting capabilities in order to track clinical and other project spending, to enable re-imbursement from investment partners. This capability supports a key source of very significant funding.

Can ERP be Used to Manage a Clinical Supply Chain?

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Some in the industry are of the opinion that ERP is not suited to manage a clinical supply chain; that there are enough unique differences between the commercial and clinical supply chain that a specialized application is required.  Naturally the ERP evangelists of the world are going to say “Yes” while those with a background strictly in clinical will say “No” – but is there an absolute truth?  Or even a middle ground?

What’s Your On-Demand Strategy?

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Clients used to ask, “What’s on-demand, and why would I do it?”. Now they ask, “I’m hearing on-demand is a great alternative, why wouldn’t I do it?”  We’re starting to reach a tipping point, and CIOs are now asked, “what is our on-demand strategy?”

The issues clients initially become concerned about are security and data, dependence on a third party, and integration with other systems.  For most emerging biotechs, the security concerns melt away when they look at their own current security versus that of any of the likely on-demand solutions and see that the provider’s security is far superior to their own.  Most on-demand providers today acknowledge that the client owns the data, and will even provide a “data escrow” facility, if the client wants to go that far.

Life Sciences and Google Sidewiki

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Google Sidewiki is a new technology, released by Google in September 2009 that allows users to read and post comments on virtually any website.  This offers a direct line of communication between company and customer that has historically happened behind closed doors, if at all.  In a regulated industry, such as the biotechnology, pharmaceutical or medical device industry, this poses financial and business risks…and potentially some rewards.

How Well Defined Business Requirements Can Impact Software Selection in the Life Sciences Industry

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Working with Life Sciences customers in both a software development as well as consulting capacity, I’ve consistently seen how challenging it can be to properly capture, define and document business requirements.  There are two very common obstacles that are important to recognize in order to achieve success.

Are emerging life science companies moving to on demand solutions?

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

I am seeing an increasing number of companies approaching us that want new IT capabilities but are concerned about costs. We’ve been looking hard at utilizing SaaS/on-demand delivery models for enterprise applications in small to mid-sized life science companies.  In the last few days, alone, I have been in discussions about ERP, QMS, Performance Management, Project Management, Document Management, Safety and CRM.
