Data Access: Limiting Factor for Sales and Clinical Supply Planning Performance

At a recent gathering of the Life Science Supply Chain Working Group hosted by Maxiom Group, 18 industry professionals met to discuss the commercial Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) Process and the Clinical Demand and Operations Planning Process (CD&OP).  The moderated panel, which included representatives from Biogen, Genzyme and Pfizer, discussed the current state of their processes, the issues and challenges associated with them.  Methods for improving these critical business processes were explored through interaction with the audience.

C&OP and S&OP: Understanding the Fundamental Differences

In my recent article published in Pharmaceutical Commerce entitled “Balancing Supply and Demand Planning in a Phase III Clinical Trial”, which outlines a real world case example of a project I recently conducted to improve the C&OP process at an emerging biotech, I came to the conclusion that if emerging biotechnology companies develop a robust Clinical and Operations Planning (C&OP) process, the overall process could easily segue into a Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) process post launch.  However, in thinking this idea through and evaluating the concept and details more closely, it may not be as simple as allowing S&OP to derive from a C&OP process.
